Unique Time Zone Identification and Terminology

The list above is the set of Windows time zone IDs and can be generated using the Windows command "tzutil /l". We use the Windows name as our unique time zone identifier for two reasons: 1) because while multiple IANA time zone names can identify a single time zone (America/Toronto and America/New_York)if no "golden zone" is specified, only one Windows time zone exists per actual time zone; and, 2) our technology stack is based on Microsoft Windows and .NET, and so time zone implementation is super simple using the Windows time zone identifiers. We do display IANA time zones along with the Windows ID to make it easier for end users to select the correct time zone, however in our API we consume and supply only the above Windows IDs.
 
There is one potentially confusing aspect to using Windows IDs: the terminology of the time zones. The term “Mountain Standard Time” has one meaning when referring to a Windows time zone, and a different meaning when referring to a point in time. When dealing with a point in time, “Mountain Standard Time” would be differentiated from “Mountain Daylight Time” in New Mexico depending on the season, but a point in time in Arizona would be referred to as “Mountain Standard Time” all year round. Regardless of the season, the time zone of New Mexico is always referred to by Windows as “Mountain Standard Time” and the time zone of Arizona is always referred to by Windows as “US Mountain Standard Time”. It would be less confusing if Microsoft had just standardized on the time zone names “Mountain Time” and “Arizona Time”, but they didn’t. 
 
 

Daylight Savings Time Adjustments

Daylight savings time adjustments are handled automatically by our system. With respect to time zones that do not utilize daylight savings, here's a clarifying example: an Arizona resident should be in “US Mountain Standard Time” while a New Mexico resident should be in “Mountain Standard Time”. The Arizona resident would remain UTC-7 all year, while the New Mexico resident would be UTC-7 in the winter and UTC-6 in the summer.
